What is Pardner (Sou-Sou)?

A pardner, also known as sou-sou or susu, is a Caribbean informal savings system where a group of people contribute a fixed amount regularly, with each member receiving the full pool on a rotating basis.

The pardner system is a traditional Caribbean financial practice rooted in West African communal savings traditions. A group of trusted individuals each contributes a set amount (the 'hand') weekly or monthly. Each period, one member receives the entire collected sum. This rotating system continues until every member has received their payout. It's widely used across Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, and other Caribbean nations as an alternative to formal banking, especially for large purchases like appliances, school fees, or business investments. The pardner system relies entirely on trust and social bonds within the community.
